The X99 FTW K features an LGA 2011-v3 CPU socket, which supports the latest high-end Intel Core i7 processors, including the Core i7-5900 series and i7-6900 series. And, of course, it has Intel’s X99 chipset. Gamer-friendly features are present, of course, including support for 2-Way, 3-Way or 4-Way SLI and a Killer Gigabit networking solution. As it did with the previous X99 FTW, EVGA designed the new X99 FTW K with overclockers in mind, providing extra power phases compared to an ordinary board. The motherboard features a quad-channel, eight-slot memory layout, letting you install as much as 128GB of memory. We doubt most users will max out those memory parameters, but it doesn’t hurt to know that you have plenty of expansion headroom. The I/O panel features four USB 2.0 ports, four USB 3.0 ports, and one each of the newer USB 3.1 Type-C and USB 3.1 Type-A ports. EVGA’s I/O panel plate does a fine job of labeling the ports and even has a “K” next to the more important of the two Ethernet ports. That K Ethernet port is targeted at gamers, as it’s connected to the Killer E2400 Gigabit Ethernet Controller. We’d have liked to see two of the USB 2.0 ports be USB 3.0, though. We could occupy two USB 2.0 ports pretty easily with a keyboard and mouse. Killer-brand network controllers prioritize Internet traffic with the aim of reducing lag in video games. Latency is a priority for most gamers, but especially for first-person shooter (FPS) players, who need to see their opponents in real time. New Killer controllers like the Killer E2400 feature some useful tools for prioritizing other traffic, as well. Want to switch from gaming to browsing the Web? 6 (2 logical cores per physical).
